Maps, Maps, Maps!

In the works ...

Maybe you've noticed:  Food and farming are back in the news.  That's my turf, so to speak.   This past summer I took a trip to Honduras to investigate the impact of high food prices.  The result was a four-part series for NPR.  Here's the first story of the series.  That page also includes links to the other pieces.

In another job for NPR, I helped with a year-long series on climage change, called Climate Connections.  Probably the most enjoyable assignment took me to Ukraine, where I interviewed the country's biggest pop music star, Ruslana, about the country's energy situation.  I did a radio piece for NPR.  And my colleague David Gilkey came along and shot some amazing video.  You can experience both audio and video productions here.

I'm returning to my long-standing interest in food and farming.  So expect lots of stories from odd corners of the agricultural universe.   For instance, what do you think of genetically engineered sugar beets?   And have you heard about the fungus that's striking fear into the hearts of wheat farmers.

I noticed a while ago that lots of bikes on the street appeared to have no gears and no brakes.  Why reject a century of technological advance in favor of simplicity and hard work?  Turns out, it's the latest trend in two-wheel transportation.
